Gov't Affairs

The Independent Insurance Agents of Indiana (IIAI) government affairs program is one of the most important areas that your association pursues. There are hundreds of bills introduced each session that could positively or negatively effect independent agents that are followed and acted upon by the IIAI.

Because of the highly regulated nature of the insurance industry, particularly to agents, IIAI has one of the most active and successful state government affairs programs in the country. This is due to several factors, including having a full-time lobbyist and having a knowledgeable and active grassroots network.

Stephen Duff is the Vice President of Government Affairs  and has been with the Indiana Big “I” since 1996.  In this role, he is the state lobbyist for the association, which entails one-on-one communication with state legislators, committee testimony and bill development and interpretation.  Some of his other duties include staffing the Big “I” Government Affairs Committee, liaison to the Indiana Department of Insurance and other state regulatory agencies, and issue research.  Steve is a 1990 graduate of Ball State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in finance.  He completed the US Chamber of Commerce sponsored Institutes for Organization Management Program for association executives at the University of Notre Dame and has obtained his Certified Association Executives designation.
